Your first day of martial arts is all about getting a feel for the school, the instructor and the other students, so don’t expect to learn much. Most schools will have about a 30 minute session with a very high-level explanation of techniques and some physical fitness (pushups, sit-ups, etc.).
When I say a high-level explanation of techniques, I’m referring to basic punches and kicks. If you pick up on these quickly, there may be time for a couple of combinations as well. Don’t expect to have any physical contact with other students, in fact, you shouldn’t have any physical contact with other students. It's hard to find anybody to like in this coming distraction known as the NFL lockout. But look closely. Yes, some of the players are millionaires. But half of the owners are billionaires.
Their estimated combined net worth is well over $40 billion, which is more than the GNP of 150 nations. Paul Allen, owner of the Seattle Seahawks, has a 414-foot yacht called "The Octopus" with two helicopters, two submarines, a swimming pool, a music studio and a basketball court. He also has two backup emergency yachts.
You're really worried about his wallet?
Yes, many of the players are diamond-coated knuckleheads. But have you ever met Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder? He's worth $1.1 billion and yet, two years ago, the Redskins sued a 73-year-old grandmother for not keeping up on her season-ticket package payments.
This man also got caught buying stale peanuts from a defunct airline and reselling them at games.
For the owners to lock out the players at this time in American history is unconscionable. You don't like the players? Fine. There are still nearly 9 percent of Americans out of work. Think of the people who've lost their homes, lost their cars and can barely pay the rent. Watching an NFL game on a Sunday -- and getting ready for it all week -- is sometimes literally the only thing keeping them going.
Do you realize what having no NFL season would do to the economy? According to the NFLPA, it's estimated it would cost each NFL city $160 million and 3,000 jobs. That's 93,000 jobs nationwide. For what? Another Aspen chalet?
Question: In 10 years, do you think you're going to find New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft wandering the streets because of the 200-plus concussions he didn't know he had from his time in the NFL? You figure Detroit Lions owner William Clay Ford will end up with ringing in the ears and depression the way former Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson did? Within the past year alone, two former players killed themselves.
You recall any NFL owners killing themselves lately?
The players aren't asking for more money. They deserve what they get, and they get it for an average of only three years. The Bidwills have owned the Cardinals for 79 years. The Rooneys have owned the Steelers for 78 years. Nine NFL owners inherited their teams. There's no easier path to permanent hot-and-cold running jets than your dad handing you an NFL team.
On the other hand, nobody hands NFL players anything but a chinstrap. With what we know about the dangers to brains now, would you exchange jobs with an NFL player?
This isn't baseball. These guys go to a job every day in which safety is Job 1,379.
The people asking for more money are the owners. They want $1 billion more out of the deal they have now.

The seat under your butt isn't any bigger. But a new stadium, usually built with vats of your tax dollars, funnels millions more per game into an owner's pocket via luxury boxes, concessions and advertising. That's money that isn't shared 32 ways. What Goodell is saying is, "We need that billion so my owners can buy new Bentleys. Theirs are dusty."
Locking out the players now would be unjust, unfair and as indefensible as Al Davis' wardrobe. There is so much to go around, it's obscene. A billion back? These guys have that in cash.

There are a lot of great names in the history of sports. But in Heaven's Sports Bar, even some Hall of Famers have to take a back seat.
Here at the only sports bar in Heaven, it's always Happy Hour and the tab never comes. The beer is colder than a DMV clerk's smile, the Cheetos bowl refills itself, and all the waitresses make Marisa Miller look like the "before" half of the ad.
The problem is, you can't get in.

Lefty looking to get it right
Phil Mickelson earned his third green jacket at Augusta National last April, but since then a myriad of distractions have contributed to his decline.
At Riviera Country Club in L.A. one day this year, a PGA Tour player was stopped at the locker room door.
"I.D.?" the guard said.
"Really?" Phil Mickelson asked.
"I.D.?" the guard said again, without blinking.
"This is Phil Mickelson," I pointed out.
"I.D., please."
Whoa. Maybe American golf really is dead.
If it is, if the grand Tiger Woods/Phil Mickelson era really has expired, let it be written that Tiger Woods' fatal wounds were self-inflicted while Mickelson's came from a piano falling on his head.
His wife got breast cancer. His mom got breast cancer. He got psoriatic arthritis so bad that he was walking up stairs at the U.S. Open like an 80-year-old man. He even gave up meat for a while. When Phil Mickelson, one of the great burger eaters in America today, gives up meat, you know it's serious.
Then somehow, his luck turned even worse.
"We've had a really scary time with [8-year-old son] Evan this year," Mickelson says. "There was a problem with his kidney. We think it must've been something that he got when we were in China [where Mickelson designs golf courses]. He was having to get tested every week and it really was worrying us. It looked like he was going to need surgery."
We've all known the golf gods hated Mickelson. Who knew God did, too?
Last season broke with such promise. He won the Masters with one of the most swashbuckling shots in history -- a 6-iron off pine straw through two trees you could have barely walked John Daly through, over Rae's Creek to four feet.
"He'd just birdied 12," says his caddy, Jim (Bones) Mackay. "And he said to me [over that shot], 'You know, if I'm going to win this tournament, I'm going to have to make a huge shot under a lot of pressure. I think this is the time.' What do you say to that? I'm going to tell him not to? The guy built my house!"
He won by three. The emotional hug with Amy. But then, by June, more trouble.
"I'd be laying in bed and it would be like my wrists and ankles were on fire," he says. Psoriatic arthritis. His left pointer finger wouldn't bend. Try to swing a driver like that. He tried vegetarianism. Phil Mickelson, owner of Five Guys burgers franchises, eating vegetables? It was like seeing a lion at a salad bar.

At the U.S. Open, he'd finish his round, ride in the air-conditioned car for five minutes to the practice range and get out walking like Methuselah. He had to learn to inject himself in the thigh. "Freaky at first, but you get used to it," he says.
But what to put in the needles? They tried different medications, different doses, all of them with new side effects.
The timing couldn't have been worse. With Woods' life upside down, Mickelson had a chance to take over the No. 1 ranking in the world. Instead, he slid the other way. He fell from the doorsill of No. 1 to sixth today. Tiger is fifth.
"Two great players of the past," Johnny Miller called them.
But that's not how Mickelson feels.
With Amy getting better, with his mom improving, with his arthritis under control, his list of life-or-death worries was whittled down to Evan, a fret big enough to stare a hole in a bedroom ceiling.
"We were really kind of worried sick about him." he says. "But then, on the last test before he was going to need surgery, the test results showed that he was back to normal. Nobody knew why. And now he's doing great again. Really great again. So, wow, that was great, great news."
What will Phil do next? Finally catch a break.
"So, really, everything's going great now in my life. I believe and I hope that this year is what last year was supposed to be."
Which makes you ask: Yeah? When's it going to start?
So far, in six starts, he's had one second place, at Torrey Pines. Everything else has been exceedingly beige -- 35th in L.A., ninth at Pebble and a 55th at Doral that was so bad he decided to sign up for this week at Bay Hill, where he and Tiger will be in the field and not a single player will be scared. He's barely hitting half his fairways (176th on tour) and less than two out of every three greens (94th).
And yet he still thinks he can win the Masters. At 40. With arthritis. "I just need to have that one good scoring week," he says.
And if he doesn't? After what he's been through? Please. He's a changed man. He's just happy when another day comes and goes without some new ABC Movie of the Week opening up in his life.
"Like, take the Tuesday dinner thing," he says, referring to the traditional Champions Night dinner at the Masters he's compelled to host as last year's winner. "Guys cater in all this macaroni lobster and soft-shelled crab and then everybody just orders steaks anyway. I'm kind of thinking maybe I should just forget it. Let them order whatever they want. Or bring in burgers. I mean, there's a Five Guys right down the street, right?"

The scariest question I ever had to ask was 25 years ago, on the Wednesday of what would become the most unforgettable Masters week ever.
I was greener than an Augusta fairway then. I was 28 and had never covered a Masters, never written golf for Sports Illustrated and never met my idol, Jack Nicklaus.
Nicklaus meant more to me than golf. He was one of the few people I could talk to my dad about. For most of my first 20 years, the two things my dad did best were booze and golf. He was scratch at both. Sunday mornings, though, came down mean and hungover. You'd tiptoe until you heard him leave for the course.
But on one Sunday in April, he wouldn't go play golf. He'd watch the back nine of the Masters. And I could sit there and watch it with him.

His favorite player was Jack. So my favorite player was Jack. He wore yellow shirts because Jack wore yellow shirts. We might not have one single other thing to talk about, but we could always talk Jack. "C'mon, Jackson!" he'd coo to the TV. Now here I was having to ask our hero the unthinkable. Shaking, I stopped him just outside the Champions Locker Room in the Augusta National clubhouse.
"Uh, Mr. Nicklaus, we hear you're broke."
Stare. Blink. Gulp.
Nicklaus took me into that sacred room and explained that he wasn't really broke. He was just overextended on some golf-course projects.
That figured. Nicklaus was 46 and trying to fit golf in as a hobby between business and kids. In seven tournaments that year, he'd made $4,404. He was 160th on the money list.
He hadn't won a major in six years. The Golden Bear was rusted through. If anything, it seemed as if he had given up. He wasn't even using his usual Augusta caddie, Willie Peterson. Instead, he was using his 24-year-old son, Jackie.
Imagine that, I thought. All that time with your dad. Sober. On a golf course.
Then, out of nowhere, it started raining 1972.
Using what seemed to be a metal mop -- that huge Response ZT -- Nicklaus began making Sunday putts from everywhere but the Piggly Wiggly market across the street.
Birdies at 9, 10, 11. People started double-checking their prescriptions. Is that really Jack Nicklaus on the leaderboard? He hasn't won here in 11 years!
A bogey at 12, then an epic 3-iron to set up birdie at 13 and a delicious 5-iron to set up eagle at 15.
Fans started abandoning their posts and beelining for Nicklaus. I remember Nick Price and Greg Norman having maybe 150 people following them and Norman was 1 shot out of the lead. It was as if the whole golf course suddenly heaved up and tilted down toward the 16th tee.
He striped a 5-iron to three feet, though he couldn't see it. "Be right," Jackie said. "It is," his dad replied.
There stood Jack -- back.

As I wrote then in SI, in a place where running is forbidden, everybody was running. I saw an elderly Southern woman in heels running. I saw a man in a tie climb a tree. I saw an employee abandon his pimento-cheese sandwich stand and run for 17, screeching to himself in delight, "He's hot! He's hot!"
So few times are there father-son moments that reach down your throat and shake you, but this was one. In Cypress, Calif., 10-year-old Tiger Woods watched with his dad. In South Africa, 16-year-old Ernie Els was allowed to stay up through the night, watching with his dad. A part of me wished I was sitting near my dad, then 68, long since permanently sober, cooing, "C'mon, Jackson!"
Cue Nicklaus trying to take the lead for the first time. Cue Verne Lundquist's famous, "Maybe & Yes, sir!" Cue pandemonium. I've been in the loudest American stadiums. I've been on the deck of aircraft carriers. But that roar at 17 was the loudest outdoor sound I've ever heard.
Because I didn't see it. I heard it. And that's when I knew a man I never thought I'd see win again was leading the 50th Masters. I sprinted for the reporters' tower at 18, where I climbed the ladder in time to see him line up a 45-footer. That putt was trouble for anybody but Jack, who had redesigned the green himself that offseason. He lagged it to a foot and tapped in for a back-nine 30, the best nine holes in an epic golf life.

This couldn't hold up, right? With eight players left on the course? No way a kid sports writer could get this lucky on his first golf assignment ever, could he?
With Nicklaus off it, all the magic left the course. Seve Ballesteros at 15: Chunk into the creek. Tom Kite's putt to tie on 18: Lip out. Norman, the last man with a chance: Spinning out on his 4-iron and straight into second place. And that was history. Golf's greatest player had just won golf's greatest tournament when the odds against him doing it had never been greater. His sixth jacket fit the best.
Turns out Jack wasn't broke at all.
Afterward, veteran golf writers' throats were closing fast. One old guy with nothing on his Olivetti had his head in his hands and was going, "This is just too BIG!"
It was big. And if Woods ends up one major short of Nicklaus, it will be even bigger.
But I loved it for the way it shrank the distance between my dad and me. I loved it because I knew, as I was writing it, that my dad would read it, savoring each word as though we had seen it together.
My dad shrank as he aged, as did my fear of him. As men, we became friends.
And when we buried him, 21 Masters later, I was glad it was in a yellow shirt.
